The Vancouver Canucks could use Eddie Lack back, and he might just be availlable
"....and maybe you could do something besides write negative shit about the team"
It seemed so long ago those words (A generous paraphrase but the intent, and the colorful language, were his) rocked Twitter. At least those lonely corners of it inhabited by fans of the Vancouver Canucks.
It was a shocking moment indeed, not that a pro athlete would swear via Twitter, in this day and age we are used to so much worse, but because through years of media awareness and "Fan sensitivity" training the way NHL players deal with fans is about as warm and organic as a Chinese blow up doll (I would imagine) To have a NHL player interact with a fan and express real fire, real emotion, to reveal he REALLY CARED the way fans do, was quite possibly unprecedented in modern pro sports,,
And this PR jewel? Man of the people? Marketable personality that while occupying the least glamorous role a hockey team has to offer, shone out like the first sunny morning of spring. Why he was none other than Vancouver's Backup Goalie Eddie lack,
To call eddy personable, would be like calling Madonna in the 80's friendly" Eddie built up the league most coveted Twitter account and truth be told pioneered a new level of branding forv athletes, in which fans were allowed to get to know the PERSON in their day to day life, the ups and downs ins and outs, t wasn't the usual contrived charity function exposure we have come to know, but real intimate exposure and interaction, to the point where it got to feels like a one-sided friendship, one-sided but welcome.
Eddie Lack did not get the recognition as a marketer of sports personality he deserved while he was here, his ingratiating personality was a natural for that kind of exposure and as the team in front of him began to fall apart, interacting with Eddie became a bright spot for Canucks fans , for management it must have been a welcome distraction, from the fabled re-tool on the fly, that to this day hasn't gotten going
Yes, management must sure have treasured this jewel of public good will that had fallen into their laps. It's hard enough to get an NHL player top look into the Camera and grunt let alone swing the doors on their lives wide open. This hard luck franchise must have been thrilled that SOMETHINg good had finally fallen into their lap's.
Note exactly, as you all will remember, Eddie at the height of his fame was sent away to hockey no-mans-land (Carolina to toil behind an incumbent #1 who could lose his job as starter if he refused to shows up for games (He has some compromising pics of the owner I would think, Cam Ward has been bad forever a decade) Eddie lack was forcibly removed from NHL relevance and once again the Vancouver Canucks acted like a team determined to self destruct
Oh how Benning and company would love him here now to take the heat off, Eddie lack would be the perfect comic relief to this joke of an organization,
And you know what? We could add probably have him back if we wanted him, you see lack hasn't exactly grabbed the reins down in Carolina, how could he? They are surgically fastened to CamWards catcher's glove? Eddie shows clear signs of being a man adrift, not given the opportunity to shine on or off the ice he seems to be shrinking into obscurity on the other side of the league,
This is a clear case of a couple who were better together than we were apart, so why not put the band together for one last tour? It's not like any of the members are doing fell apart anyway, Benning loves to toss around 2nds, well this time why doesn't he spend one something we all can enjoy
Bring Lack home where he belongs
